A Working Men's Club and Reading Room was built by Mr H. C. Hardy in 1886. In the tough winter of 1891, the building of All Saint's Church saw many workmen in the village and the club would provide some indoor recreation for those men.
The Reading Room was used by local village men, up until it became the Royal British Legion Club in 1939. in the early 1950's, was extended and the village pond filled in to make a car park. In 1972, The British Legion Club (Danehill and Chelwood Gate) became The Danehill and Chelwood Gate Social Club.
